Dubrovnik. I asked the Croatian kid working at our campsite if he had ever seen the GoT actors. He had not, but he said a bunch of his friends work as extras on the show – the producers call for locals to be extras. We both agreed that we would both like to meet Peter Dinklage. Ah, violent fantasy television, bringing the cultures together.

Dubrovnik was the first foreign city I ever visited as a quasi independent traveller – I was 13 and I was supposed to be in Venice. The jet had to divert because of fog, and all the evil little schoolchildren I was (barely) educated with were unleashed on what was then a very quiet and unspoilt town. I suppose that was just a bit of preparation for what would happen to the place in later years. Then of course, it was all just Yugoslavia under Marshal Tito – the year was 1969. (God, I’m so old!) I happen to think Ratko Mladic learned his tricks from Tom Kelly of our playground mafia.
